Representing Estonian Ornithological Society regarding peat extraction in Elbu bog
Representing one of the oldest and most respected Estonian environmental NGO in a dispute over planned peat extraction in Elbu bog. The bog, which is part of the Lavassaare bog complex, is partly a nature conservation area. Peat extraction planned in the vicinity of the protected area would, among other things, destroy an EU priority habitat (7110* – active raised bogs). The dispute is legally complex and holds an important precedent value, as it concerns both interpretation of EU law (the Birds and Habitats Directives) as well as the impact which national biodiversity and climate strategies have on environmental permits. The challenged permit is in direct contradiction with the provisions of national strategies on avoiding further destruction of natural peatlands.
