What does the concept of gender mean in the Istanbul Convention?

Public debate about the Istanbul Convention and the meaning of the term “gender” used in it has become increasingly active. 

In the broadcast “What does the concept of gender mean in the Istanbul Convention?”, WALLESS Partner Sandis Bērtaitis shared his perspective, noting that one of the most common misconceptions about the Convention concerns the understanding of this very concept. 

Gender refers to the social perceptions of what it means to be a man or a woman, and the behaviours expected from each. The Convention’s main goal is to eliminate practices rooted in the idea of women’s inferiority.
