Innovation moves fast. But are defense startups legally and regulatorily ready to keep up?
For defense technology startups, the focus is often on developing solutions, testing them in the field and bringing innovations to market. Meanwhile, legal, intellectual property (IP) and regulatory considerations can easily take a back seat.
Supporting the next generation of Latvian defense technology innovators is an important part of building a stronger and more resilient defense ecosystem.
WALLESS Expert Partner Andis Ozolins recently took part in DIAL (Defense Innovation Accelerator for Latvia), a pre-acceleration programme bringing together 12 Latvian defense technology teams.
During a fireside chat and discussions with emerging entrepreneurs, Andis shared his expertise on the regulatory challenges that defense startups need to consider when developing and scaling their businesses.
The challenge? Bureaucratic processes, AML requirements, sanctions compliance and other regulatory obligations can slow down innovation. Under pressure to move quickly, startups may overlook important legal considerations until an issue arises.
The key takeaway applies to any business: Legal, IP and regulatory readiness should be part of the development process, not an afterthought. Addressing these matters early can help avoid obstacles when entering partnerships, attracting investment or bringing solutions to market.
Thank you to UniLab for the invitation and the opportunity to once again contribute to this valuable initiative.
